PRAGUE CEMETERY

Hostivar, Prague
Team: Massimo Galeotti, Marco Plazzogna, Elisa Rizzato

The enlargement of the Hostiva? cemetery (Prague, 15th district) develops in the southern area of the current graveyard and serves as a referral source for a future development of the cemetery in its eastern part, which is to be split in four wings. The plan shows how the classic scheme applied to cemetery areas has been subverted: the rigorous axiality of the paths connecting different areas and the rigid arrangement of gravestones and burial cells are interrupted by means of wide central wooded areas dedicated to ash scattering.

The road runs along the western side of the cemetery, whereas the access to the new area is on the south-eastern side: a service road leads to this entrance, which is provided with a short-term parking lot for 10 vehicles and is characterized by a steel platform roof with tapered edges and panelled with golden anodized aluminium. The access to the existing cemetery is on the northern side of the enlargement and is enclosed on the three sides by a 3 metre high wall made of charcoal grey concrete. The wall is covered by a concrete platform roof with its edges tapered towards the inside of the park: the platform roof serves as a cover for a 1,5 metre wide path in clay-coloured concrete.
