Galway, Ireland
Team: Massimo Galeotti, Elena Cecchetto, Vittorio Massimo

Galway is a city in the West of Ireland, and is considered the region’s cultural capital. It lies on the River Corrib between Lough Corrib and Galway Bay, and is surrounded by County Galway.

The project is addressed to the community of the city and aims at improving the city plan, its infrastructures and housing solutions by creating and developing new residential, commercial and business areas: a new contemporary formal style able to embody the bond between the citizens and the territory contextualizes the new buildings in the urban texture.

The search for a city’s new identity is parallel to an urban and architectural proposal featuring a low environmental impact. All the existing landscape and architectural reference points are the genesis of the project, which aims at extending Galway’s suburban area.

Both low-medium density residential blocks and tall multifunctional public buildings are designed to respect the morphology of the territory, keeping the view on the surrounding mountains and the bay intact. The attention to the local landscape and morphology is coupled with an accurate selection of materials and architectural techniques, to pay tribute to Galway’s cultural and architectural tradition.
